CIMES is focused on developing robust research and strong educational programs in geographic areas that present significant homeland security challenges. Its goal is to deliver revolutionary advances in maritime domain security capabilities that will allow for the eventual development and fielding of critically needed new capabilities. Guided by informed assessment of the DHS maritime problem suite, CIMES will achieve success in a number of scientific and technical areas of direct relevance to DHS. CIMES will closely coordinate its efforts with the National Center for Secure and Resilient Maritime Commerce and Coastal Environments (CSR) located at the Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken New Jersey.

DHS-10-ST-062-002
University of Puerto Rico, Mayaguez
CIMES researchers at the University of Puerto Rico Mayaguez (UPRM) successfully solicited funding for their program entitled “Education and Training of Students on Maritime Domain and Port Security at UPRM” from the DHS’ Scientific Leadership Awards for Minority Serving Institutions Granting Bachelor Degrees. The three-year project, led by Drs. Vidya Manian (PI), Hector Carlo (Co-PI) and Miguel Canals (Co-PI from CSR), will increase minority participation in DHS-related science and technology by the addition of course modules that will have a broader audience. The expectation is that about 100 students per year will be impacted by the course additions.
